Diese Studie möchte eine existenzphilosophische Vorarbeit zu einer Phänomenologie der Normativität leisten. Durch Auslegungen vor allem griechischer, mittelhochdeutscher und klassischer deutscher Dichtung werden zunächst die Grundbegriffe von Faktizität und Existentialität herausgearbeitet. Auf dieser Grundlage erfolgt sodann die Beschreibung von Anlass und Gestalt normativer Praxis. Diese Beschreibung wird endlich als anthropologische Grundlage philosophischer Ethik vorgeschlagen.

In diesem Buch zeigt Björn Sydow die Möglichkeit des Menschseins unter Berücksichtigung der menschlichen Leidenschaften auf. Mit dem Begriff Leidenschaft beziehen wir uns auf Zustände beziehen, in denen Menschen darauf ausgerichtet sind, im Vollzug einer bestimmten Tätigkeit zu stehen. Das Ausleben solcher Leidenschaften ist nicht mit einer dualistischen Konzeption des menschlichen Handelns verträglich, weil darin das Handlungssubjekt von dem Vorgang des Verhaltens stets getrennt bleibt, so dass sich der Wunsch, ganz im aktiven Vollzug einer Tätigkeit zu stehen, gar nicht erfüllen (...) kann. In kritischem Anschluss an Helmuth Plessners Theorie der Lebewesen wird dem Versuch nachgegangen, menschliches Handeln nicht als Wirkung mentaler Zustände zu konzipieren, sondern als die Aktualisierung von Vermögen, die ebenso wie die Verhaltensdispositionen unbelebter Körper als Ausdifferenzierung des Eingebundenseins körperlicher Wesen in die Welt gelten können. So wird die dualistische Konzeption des Menschseins unterlaufen, ohne das menschliche Handeln zu einem unbelebten Vorgang verkommen zu lassen. Dabei steht das Vorgehen unter dem Anspruch, die Welt der körperlichen Einzeldinge auch in dieser Ausweitung als diejenige primäre Wirklichkeit zu erhalten, von der wir durch unsere Sinne Wissen erwerben können. English summary: The fact that rationalization and self-reflection were possible even across denominational boundaries is one of the fascinating characteristics of the period of enlightenment. This often led to a more flexible understanding of the concept of religion, which proved to be very open to being integrated into the debate. In his study, Bjorn Pecina develops just such an understanding of religion by evaluating the works of two outstanding scholars: Moses Mendelssohn and Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jerusalem. German description: Es gehort (...) zu den faszinierenden Merkmalen des Aufklarungsjahrhunderts, dass sich hier Rationalisierungs- und Selbstreflexionsprozesse uber konfessionelle Grenzen hinwegzusetzen vermochten. Dies fuhrte nicht selten zu einer Offnung des Religionsbegriffs, der sich als ungemein integrationsfahig erwies. Bjorn Pecina entfaltet in der vorliegenden Untersuchung ein solches Religionsverstandnis, indem er sich dem Werk besonders zweier herausragender Gelehrter zuwendet: Moses Mendelssohn und Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jerusalem. Jerusalem ist reprasentativ fur das Aufklarungsjahrhundert. Er eignet sich gut, die Epoche nach ihrem religionstheoretischen Profil darzustellen, zugleich aber auch Kontinuitaten sichtbar werden zu lassen. Various versions of the objection to utilitarianism that it is too demanding are discussed and rejected. It is argued that a scalar version of utilitarianism that makes wrongness a matter of degree further improves the prospects for utilitarianism to escape the demandingness-objection.

Evidentiality deals with the marking of information source, that is with means that specify how we come to know what we (think to) know. For instance, such means indicate whether knowledge derives from hearsay, or whether an inference has been based on perception or on knowledge about habits. Often these indications are vague. This book focuses on sentence adverbs and so-called function words in Slavic languages. Six of them were subject of a questionnaire survey, whose discussion, preceded by general methodological (...) background, occupies the second part of this book. The first half contains a thorough consideration of notional links between evidentiality and related domains, first of all of epistemic modality, and it discusses the intricacies of doing lexicography of evidential marking. For over a century, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard has been at the center of a number of important discussions, concerning not only philosophy and theology, but also, more recently, fields such as social thought, psychology, and contemporary aesthetics, especially literary theory. Despite his relatively short life, Kierkegaard was an extraordinarily prolific writer, as attested to by the 26-volume Princeton University Press edition of all of his published writings. But Kierkegaard left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which (...) consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Kierkegaard has long been recognized as one of history's great journal keepers, but only rather small portions of his journals and notebooks are what we usually understand by the term “diaries.” By far the greater part of Kierkegaard’s journals and notebooks consists of reflections on a myriad of subjects—philosophical, religious, political, personal. Studying his journals and notebooks takes us into his workshop, where we can see his entire universe of thought. We can witness the genesis of his published works, to be sure—but we can also see whole galaxies of concepts, new insights, and fragments, large and small, of partially completed but unpublished works. Kierkegaard’s Journals and Notebooks enables us to see the thinker in dialogue with his times and with himself. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for his initial entries and the second for the extensive marginal comments that he added later. This edition of the journals reproduces this format, includes several photographs of original manuscript pages, and contains extensive scholarly commentary on the various entries and on the history of the manuscripts being reproduced. Volume 9 of this 11-volume series includes five of Kierkegaard’s important “NB” journals, which span from June 1852 to August 1854. This period was marked by Kierkegaard’s increasing preoccupation with what he saw as an unbridgeable gulf in Christianity—between the absolute ideal of the religion of the New Testament and the official, state-sanctioned culture of “Christendom,” which, embodied by the Danish People’s Church, Kierkegaard rejected with increasing vehemence. Crucially, Kierkegaard’s nemesis, Bishop Jakob Peter Mynster, died during this period and, in the months following, Kierkegaard can be seen moving inexorably toward the famous “attack on Christendom” with which he ended his life. In this paper we present the results of a simulation study of credence developments in groups of communicating Bayesian agents, as they update their beliefs about a given proposition p. Based on the empirical literature, one would assume that these groups of rational agents would converge on a view over time, or at least that they would not polarize. This paper presents and discusses surprising evidence that this is not true. Our simulation study shows that these groups of Bayesian agents (...) show group polarization behavior under a broad range of circumstances. This is, we think, an unexpected result, that raises deeper questions about whether the kind of polarization in question is irrational. If one accepts Bayesian agency as the hallmark of epistemic rationality, then one should infer that the polarization we find is also rational. On the other hand, if we are inclined to think that there is something epistemically irrational about group polarization, then something must be off in the model employed in our simulation study. We discuss several possible interfering factors, including how epistemic trust is defined in the model. Ultimately, we propose that the notion of Bayesian agency is missing something in general, namely the ability to respond to higher-order evidence. (shrink)

Body checking, characterized by the repeated visual or physical inspection of particular parts of one’s own body (e.g. thighs, waist, or upper arms) is one of the most prominent behaviors associated with eating disorders, particularly Anorexia Nervosa (AN). In this paper, we explore the explanatory potential of the Recalcitrant Fear Model of AN (RFM) in relation to body checking. We argue that RFM, when combined with certain plausible auxiliary hypotheses about the cognitive and epistemic roles of emotions, is able to (...) explain key characteristics of body checking, including how body checking behavior becomes habitual and compulsive.
